Scan tools and gauges help you diagnose issues offroad
Should you get a scan gauge or scan tool? One of the questions we get asked a lot. If you tow a caravan or camper trailer, or have a newer model of 4WD, a scan gauge or scan tool, can help you diagnose and fix problems that may arise when you’re on the road and don’t have immediate access to a mechanic.
More simply, a scan gauge or tool is a code reader that allows you to track information from the vehicle’s sensors in real time.
What does a scan gauge or scan tool do?
A scan tool can track fuel economy and fuel used, monitor your auto transmission fluid and temperature, and clear error codes that may cause your vehicle to not start or make dreaded noises.
Scan gauge or scan tool, which is better?
Choosing a scan gauge or scan tool will be very dependent on the person and the vehicle.
- Scan gauge – Will allow you to constantly monitor all the vitals, often allowing you to identify a possible issue before the vehicle starts throwing any faults or codes.
- Scan tool – Is great for dealing with any issues that arise with your vehicle. Many will often help you identify the common issues based on the code that is thrown.
What are the benefits of a Scangauge/OBD2 scanner?
- Allows you to diagnose problems without a mechanic.
- May allow you to avoid needing a tow truck in the middle of nowhere.
- Some “engine warning lights” can mean disaster, others might just be non-critical. Without a tool, you won’t know what light is showing and what to do about it, especially if you’re offroad.
- Scangauge lets you monitor the many changing parameters of the vehicle to identify any issues prior to them causing failure.
- Either of these options (Scangauge or an OBD2 scanner) may help you identify what the next modification needs to be because you will see the performance dropping indicators.
