4WD tyres for every driving condition
If you take your rig offroad, you’re going to need a 4×4 tyre that can keep up with the harsh conditions your vehicle will face.
Your 4WD will be more capable in handling the challenging off-road conditions with an all terrain or mud terrain tyre, and there’s an off-road tyre for just about every application these days.
Let the team at Midland 4WD Centre help you choose the best 4×4 tyres for you and your future 4WD trips.
What 4x4 tyres do I need to get offroad?
If you’ve ever asked yourself, do I need all terrain tyres or mud terrain tyres on my 4×4, there’s a general rule of thumb.
Highway terrain tyres:
90 per cent on-road and 10 per cent offroad
All terrain tyres:
60 per cent on-road driving and 40 per cent offroad driving
Mud terrain tyres:
15 per cent on-road driving and 85 per cent offroad driving
Generally, mud terrains have stronger side walls and are chip resistant on rocky tracks. There are some really good quality and popular all terrain tyres on the market too.
However, your decision may not only be based on performance, but also your personal preference and the look you want to achieve on your 4WD, for example, some 4WDers go for mud terrains because they want a more aggressive look.
When selecting tyres for your 4WD consider these 3 points
Consider the real use of your vehicle and choose your 4×4 tyres based on how realistically you go off the bitumen. It’s also important to consider the future trips and conditions you may find yourself in too.
Think about your 4WD trips and where you go, does it involve beach driving, gravel roads or full on rock climbing? If you’re out every weekend on serious 4WD tracks, then a mud terrain may be best for you. If you only do a bit of beach driving and gravel roads a few times a year (at Easter and Christmas), then an all terrain tyre may be what you need.
We’d be happy to discuss the options with you in store.
Believe it or not, the type of tyre that you use may actually be limited by how you set up your vehicle. While most vehicles with a few basic modifications will be fine, once you start getting into heavier vehicles, tyres need to be correctly load rated. Vehicles with GVM upgrades will often need to ensure they have a tyre with a high enough load capacity. This often pushes vehicles into the space where they need to get a Light Truck (LT) rated tyre and may exclude some brands, sizes or tried patterns.
