Upgrade your 4WD with a torque converter lockup kit
If you use your vehicle to tow a caravan (or similarly heavy item), hard-core four wheeling or you’re often loading it up to its GVM, a torque converter lockup kit may be an upgrade you consider for your automatic transmission.
If you’re not sure whether a torque converter lockup kit, such as a Shocklock kit, is worth it for your 4WD, the M4C team can help you with the right information.
What is a torque converter lockup kit?
Where a manual vehicle uses a clutch to disconnect the engine from the transmission, an automatic 4WD vehicle can use a torque converter to do the same job.
A torque converter is a fluid coupling (an alternative to a clutch) that lets the engine spin independently (to a degree) from the transmission.
A torque converter lockup kit can be used to stabilise and maintain the revs of an automatic transmission (similar to what a manual vehicle does). When you reach your desired speed, you simply switch the system on and the converter kit does the rest.
Why do you need one?
A Stocklock torque converter lockup kit can help improve the performance of your vehicle by reducing the power lost between the engine and transmission, reduces heat and improves fuel economy.
What Vehicles are they available for?
The Stocklock is currently available for;
- 200 Series Landcruiser
- 150 Prado
- 2.8 & 3l Hilux
- 100 Series
