What do you need when towing?
Regardless of whether you are towing your caravan around Australia or a camper trailer away for the weekend, good quality towing accessories will give you the peace of mind and confidence you need before you hit the road.
Tow bar or rear bar with tow hitch
There are generally two options for towing: A tow bar or a rear bar with tow hitch. A tow bar is a strong yet simple option, while a real bar is more heavy duty and will often allow for additional storage options for spare tyres or jerry cans.
Electric trailer brakes
If you intend to tow a caravan and trailer over 750kg you’ll need electric brakes (trailers under 750kg don’t require them). If you install electric brakes, you will need a brake controller; they won’t work without it.
Electric brake controllers
Electric brake controllers allow you to control the intensity of the brakes on the trailer and ensure that the trailer brakes when you do. The extra few tonnes makes a big difference to your stopping power if you are still only using your vehicle brakes. Top quality brake controllers use “remote heads” meaning that you can mount the module out of the way and just have a small control knob somewhere on your dashboard.
Towing upgrades
Depending on what you want to tow, you may need to upgrade your suspension and other components of your 4WD to accommodate your towing needs and support your vehicle to tow safely.
How to choose between a tow bar and a rear bar
REAR BARS
- Offer extra carry space (spare wheel carrier, jerry can holders and so on)
- Are often higher, giving a better departure angle
- Offer more protection around the vehicle
TOW BARS
- Are much lighter
- Are less obtrusive on your vehicle
- Are cheaper and simpler option
